How To: An Easy Everyday Fishtail Braid

The fishtail has been made super popular over the past few years by J-Law as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, but every time I see it on someone it looks like such a complex braid – compared to a basic plait – that it can be a little intimidating. Discovery Specialist Emma can whip up a fishtail in just a minute so we asked her to tell us her tricks:

YOU WILL NEED:

A hair elastic, a mirror (to see what you’re doing) and a succulent plant (optional).

STEP 1:

Tie hair into a low side ponytail. Make sure you keep the elastic loose as you’ll be sliding it down over your fishtail braid at the end.

Split hair into two halves.

Take a smaller section of hair from the back of the left hand half and weave between the two sections then lose it in the right hand half. Then, take a section of hair from the back of the right hand half and weave between the two sections, before losing it in the left hand half.

And continue this process…

Once you’ve finished the fishtail braid, take your hair elastic and slide it down over the plait to the base. Then tighten.

Pull at your fishtail braid to loosen it and mess it up a little. Then add a little volume to your hair.
